AlphaLoop – Deltares (NL)

Deltares’ AlphaLoop is a unique experimental facility for investigating a wide range of multiphase flows in pipeline systems. The AlphaLoop allows for single-phase (water), two-(phase) (water&air), and three-phase (water, air and sediment) experiments. The AlphaLoop is applied with various clients and partners including industries, engineering firms, water boards, and universities to assess design and operational questions.

Aquatic Mesocosm Facility – CEH (UK)

We use the CEH Aquatic Mesocosm Facility (CAMF) to disentangle how different external drivers or stressors influence the structure and function of shallow lake ecosystems. With its 35 isolated tanks, it is ideal for experiments under controlled conditions. A simple adjacent laboratory is available for storage, working space and sample preparation.

DANUBIUS RI – Several EurAqua parnters

DANUBIUS-RI will be a pan-European distributed research infrastructure dedicated to interdisciplinary studies of large river–sea systems. It will enable and support research addressing the conflicts between society’s demands, environmental change and environmental protection in river–sea systems worldwide.

DANUBIUS-RI is being developed by partners in eleven European countries, with expressions of interest and support from the scientific community in many others in Europe and worldwide. It aims to become operational by 2022.

DANUBIUS-RI is included in the 2016 ESFRI Roadmap (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) and is a EUSDR Flagship Project (EU Strategy for the Danube Region.

GroDome – CEH (UK)

The GroDome allows scientists to conduct research on habitats under strictly controlled conditions. Each of its eight separate compartments can precisely manipulate light and temperature, acting as unique experiment sites. Since its opening at Wallingford in 2009 researchers have used the 38m-long GroDome for studying such diverse subjects as soil bacteria, ants, gorse and heather.

Research Vessel Aranda - SYKE (FI)

Aranda is a modern, ice-reinforced research vessel. She was planned and built for Baltic Sea research, but in principle, she is able to operate in all seas. It is the first research vessel which is owned by the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE).

Solardomes and ozone field release system – CEH (UK)

The Solardomes and Ozone Field Release System at CEH’s Bangor site is used to research the effects of air pollution, particularly ozone and nitrogen, on vegetation such as crops, trees and grasslands. Eight hemispherical glasshouses in which vegetation is grown at different ozone levels.  Nine free air ozone exposure (FAOE) rings in which vegetation is grown at ambient and elevated ozone levels.
